As far as the story is concered, Ubisoft can easily do a turnaround by claiming that current records showed Feudal Japan as having been the first known time the Assassins set foot in Japan, but then discover that there was in fact evidence of an Assassin presence in Japan prior to that, but that at some point there was a great purge that wiped the Assassins out of recorded history, perhaps reinforced by an ancestor's memories.

After all, Altair did disperse the Levantine Brotherhood, but that doesn't essentially mean that all the Assassins went west to the European cities.

It just seems a little silly for the series to focus on the Middle Ages as being the earliest known presence of Assassins, just because the first game is set there, and taking a dive back into history might actually be something to revive the series, because I'd rather not have the series going forward and forward in time just for the sake that Ubisoft have the rough idea of an end to the series, for the whole motivation of just putting a "now we're caught up" cap on the franchise.
