Lucy Stillman is a former genetic memory researcher working for Abstergo Industries. It is later revealed that she was secretly working as a spy for the Assassins in an attempt to free Desmond from Abstergo's hold.

Biography

Early Life

In Assassin's Creed, Lucy Stillman was introduced as a research assistant for Dr. Warren Vidic, working for Abstergo Industries for three years, focusing on the Animus project. Dr. Vidic considered her as an invaluable asset for Abstergo due to her intelligence and knowledge in cognitive neuroscience. Although he rarely expresses it, he values her quite highly. Lucy was a talented student at her university and studied science but was rejected in many fields of work because of of her strong beliefs in genetic memory which, unbeknown to her, was the work Abstergo performed to retrieve seemingly lost information in an effort to accomplish goals. According to Lucy, she applied at a variety of locations and tried close to everything to achieve employment, at one point joking to Desmond, "I was this close to waiting tables."

Understandably, she was excited when she got a call from Dr. Vidic offering her a position in the Animus project. She accepted and began working with Dr. Vidic immediately for three years and was responsible for the design of a number of the Animus's functions and interfaces. While Lucy was on fairly cordial and friendly terms with a few other employees at Abstergo, such as Richard, these same individuals later tried to have Lucy killed before Vidic intervened.

Assassin's Creed

Lucy was a person who showed that she at least considered Desmond to be a person, rather than a lab-rat, like Vidic treats him. Desmond showed some hostility towards her at first, but trust between them started to build up as they conversed more about each other's past.

Lucy explained that during her university career she was ostracised for her scientific beliefs and theories. The criticism continued after university. No scientific organization or academic institute would employ her. Desperate, she was almost ready to give up science altogether. Then she received a call from Dr. Vidic, who told her he agreed with her theories and offered her the chance to work for Abstergo and to prove her theories to be true. The beliefs she was criticized for may have regarded genetic memory. She quickly learns from him how to use the Animus, as her interest in genetic memory only motivated her to continue her work as Vidic's assistant.

Lucy later revealed to Desmond that he was not the only person Abstergo was detaining. She too was an unfortunate captive. She then told him a story about how a while back, Abstergo decided to silence her to keep her from speaking about the Animus, but before her assailants could commit her murder, they were ordered to stop by Dr. Warren Vidic. She claimed that he saved her life that day, and she told Desmond not to judge Dr. Vidic so harshly, as he was under a lot of pressure.

As more time passed on, Lucy leaves the access codes behind in Desmond's wardrobe, so that he finally could leave his room. On the Animus Desmond found Lucy's pen, which was left their for him to find. This gave him access her computer, in order to read her E-mails.

Lucy bending her finger as a signal to Desmond

From the messages, Desmond learns that Lucy was the truth, as she was obviously concerned for her own safety and was trying to find out more information about a previous Abstergo employee who died a while back. This employee was said to have "committed suicide" but the documents relating to the death were being held as classified and were not being released. Later Desmond digs deeper into her E-mails finding information about a friend of Lucy, Leila Marino who died in September 2007. The E-mail further stated that no circumstances were revealed to her. Vidic replied that it was suicide and that "it had something to do with a kid named Neumann." Lucy asked Nancy Nilop for information concerning Leila's death to which Nancy replied that the coroner's report was confidential. Lucy also sent an e-mail to Alan Rikkin to which he never responded.

In one deleted E-mail, there was a conversation in which Lucy told another person that she has been delaying the doctor from finding the artifacts and asking for the other person to send a rescue. A strange reply appeared to be an attachment, but had random capitalization of letters. This was a coded message in which the capitalized letters are put together, they formed, "WE WILL BE THERE SOON". Lucy now had gained Desmond's full trust, though he still remained slightly sceptical about her. Through the memories of Altaïr, Vidic finally found what he was looking for, namely the location of the Pieces of Eden. Later however a gunfight could be heard outside, and Vidic explained to Desmond that present-day Assassins had come for him. Lucy hinted to Desmond that she is allied to the assassins, showing Desmond her left hand and symbolically bends her ring finger, to have it appear like Altaïr's missing finger, and it became clear to him that she was spying on Abstergo Industries. The V-neck and collar of her blouse, if turned upside down, were also identical to the Assassin's logo. As the situation became dire, due to the assassin's attack, Vidic ordered to dispose Desmond. Lucy cleverly enough convinces him to keep Desmond for more testing, as his memories could still reveal more about the locations of the Pieces of Eden, but she has to leave him behind in the lab.

Assassin's Creed II

Taking place a couple of hours after the end of the first game, Lucy is reintroduced to the story with blood splatters on her shirt, presumably from fighting her way to where Desmond is being held. Lucy flees with Desmond from the Abstergo building, through many cubicles where you find out there is more than just the one animus that Desmond was using. After fleeing to the Hideout, where she introduces Desmond to two of her assassin friends, Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane. She reveals to Desmond what happened to Subject 16. During this time, Desmond can engage in conversations with Lucy, some of which hint toward a romantic involvement with Desmond and Lucy, and also with Shaun, and Rebecca (it is actually required).

When Abstergo invades their hideout, she gives Desmond a Hidden Blade and they go to fight them. When she sees Vidic, he reminds her that he saved her, which is why she came to work for Abstergo. When the Abstergo guards are defeated, Lucy and the others' escape the hideout, and head to another one in the mountains, while Desmond is preparing to enter the Animus again to continue searching for clues, while she studies the notes and tries to figure out what the "Goddess" Minerva meant, and also tells Desmond that everything she feared would happen, is starting to happen.

Personality

In contrast with Warren Vidic's personality, Lucy is an optimistic and cheerful woman with a bright personality. She always has some encouraging words and sympathy towards Desmond Miles, though it obviously irritates him sometimes. At times when Warren Vidic attempts to force Desmond to go deeper to the Animus memory, Lucy will stop him from going and plead with Vidic to allow Desmond to rest, showing her caring personality. She may also be doing that to slow down Vidic and Abstergo from getting to the Piece of Eden.

Trivia

  • She is modelled after and voiced by Kristen Bell.
  • The achievement of "Conversationalist" can be unlocked in the 360 version of the first game by talking to Lucy every time Desmond comes out of the Animus. Note that you must talk to her completely, until she says that she's too busy to talk or ask if he's tired.
  • Lucy's character model is drastically altered between games. In the first Assassin's Creed, she is dressed in appropriate business/work attire. In Assassin's Creed II, she has clothes which are much more casual, a slightly larger figure, and different facial structure: larger eyes and lipstick. Lucy's eyes also go from blue-grey to completely blue.
