I think it's more about people's ideals. There aren't any hooded figures with hidden blades leaping throughout cities nor are the Templar knights patrolling the city streets. Both groups advanced and became more modern and their war went from open conflict to elections and political arguments.

What I'm saying is that neither groups are real, but their philosophies stay true. They aren't exactly the same - you wont find politicians following the exact creed, but there are some political parties and governments who are loosely based upon the philosophies of both Templars and Assassins - governments who want order and governments who want freedom. Ubi took that concept and developed it into a more suitable philosophy and give it a secret society to follow it.

That's about as real as it can get - if at all.

P.S. My only evidence on this is that I've seen so called Templars puppets like George Bush talk about forging a New World Order. Like [[1]]
