A katana was reinforced so as to be able to cut through armour in the right hands. Samurai would face off with their katana and dishonored Samurai would commit seppuku or hara kiri. During the shogun era, entire villages were massacred. Large scale battles for power took place all over Japan. Ninja and Samurai had their hands full.
