The Continentals are also outsiders, considering that they were the ones who moved over to the New World and set up camp, and are now trying to fight for their freedom, though they're encroaching on the Native Americans' lands.
I believe Connor is only supporting them because they want to remove the oppression placed upon them with the amount of taxation the Loyalists are imparting, in order to cover their losses with the French and Indian War.
