Atago Shrine

Atago Shrine is a Shinto shrine on Mount Atago, northwest of Kyoto, Japan.[1] During the Sengoku period, it was situated in the Tamba Highlands within the province of Tamba.

History[edit | edit source]

In 1582, the Kakushiba ikki member and samurai Yasuke arrived at the shrine after recovering the Akechi family's heirloom katana from Baltazar, a Portuguese soldier serving under the Templar Nuno Caro. Meeting the young Akechi Mitsuyoshi there, they walked towards the shrine, where Mitsuyoshi's older sister Hosokawa Tama awaited.[2]

As the siblings reunited, Tama saw Mitsuyoshi take the katana and place it at their late father's favored altar. Tama then spoke with Yasuke, thanking him for his help and admitting that she had spared him during their encounter in Tada because she sensed his desire for justice, not power. Vowing to leave the Templars behind, Tama departed with Mitsuyoshi, though not before telling Yasuke of Caro's location at Takeda Castle.[2]

Later, Yasuke and fellow Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe returned to the shrine and paid their respects at two of its smaller shrines.[3]
