globes/ apples/ orbs in paintings - especially in the renaissance - were a common symbol artists used to represent wisdom or power (for example, nearly all paintings of kings have some orbs in 'em). this "trend" in paintings came right after the humanity was convinced of the earth being a giant ball (^^) as rulers always wanted to state "i hold the earth in my hand" aka "look at me, im so powerful - trololol" but besides this, its awesome new paintings of da vinci were found :)
