- Not *only*. It is stated that the blade taked the place of the ring finger. It was removed both as a ritual and as precaution. That way, the finger did not get in the way of the mecanism. Imagine an assassin approaching a target and activating the blade, but with his fist closed. The blade would spring out and cut his finger off. Cutting at a ritual prevented that and could probably also be made less painfully, and the subject would have time to recover. -- D. Cello 03:24, December 23, 2009 (UTC)
