Zhang Huaigu (張懷骨) was the squad leader of the 15th Squad, an elite unit of crossbowmen in the Anxi Protectorate 7th Army. He and his squad fought under General Gao Xianzhi at the Battle of Talas[1] in 751 against the Abbasid Caliphate,[2] but they suffered a disastrous defeat to Ziyad ibn Salih's forces.[2] One of the soldiers in his squad, Li E,[1] later became an Assassin[3] who was instrumental in the Tang struggle against the An Lushan Rebellion and in ridding the court against the corrupting influence of the Golden Turtles.[4][5]
