The Xiongnu were a confederation of tribal nomadic peoples who inhabited Eurasian Steppe in Mainland Asia from the 3rd century BCE to the 1st century CE.

From at least since the 3rd century BCE, the Xiongnu have led raids into the Chinese mainland. In response, the Qing Emperor Qin Shi Huang ordered the construction of the Great Wall to defend against the raiders. One such person who participated in its defense was the adopted child of the Wei Yu,[1] who assassinated the Emperor in 210 BCE.[2]
