Vithrloekr

Vithrloekr was an abandoned Wolf Clan camp in western Vinland.

History

In the 870s, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir found the camp overrun by black bears. Within the campgrounds, Eivor saw a Norse man playing dead and heard his pleas for help. After Eivor killed all the bears in the area and investigated the remains, she found that the bears were meant to be trained as "war-bears" for Gorm Kjotvesson, only for them to break loose and kill most of the camp.[1]

Behind the scenes

Vithrloekr is an Old Norse compound word composed of the nouns viðr, meaning wood, and lœkr, meaning brook. Together, the full word roughly translates to "woods [by the] brook".
