Ventre de Paris (English: The Belly of Paris) was one of 18th century Paris’ seven major districts. It was located in the north of the city and consisted of the Porte Saint-Denis, Halles, and Hôtel de Ville subdistricts. One major landmark was the Cour des Miracles, a dangerous slum occupied by innumerable beggars "ruled" by the cruel Roi des Thunes, or King of Beggars, and eking out a living on donations received from citizens.
