Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Cleveland (1591 – 1667) was an English general.
In 1651, during the English Civil War, Wentworth fought for Charles II against the troops of Oliver Cromwell at Worcester. Though the King's army fought bravely, Cromwell's troops proved too numerous, and they were forced to retreat into the city. Wentworth then led a desperate cavalry charge against the enemy to divert attention away from the king, allowing Charles II to escape through St. Martin's Gate.[1]
