The Papal Musketeers were firearm soldiers who served and protected the pontiff during their tenure.
There are two known kinds of musketeers:
- Militia Musketeers
- Armoured Musketeers
In 1499, the musketeers were under the command of Cesare Borgia, son of Pope Alexander VI, and participated in the assault on Monteriggioni; one musketeer managed to wound Ezio Auditore da Firenze during the latter stages of the assault.[1]. In 1503, the musketeers continued to serve under Cesare, keeping watch over a Papal parade in Rome. At least one musketeer spotted an approaching Ezio Auditore, but was killed by another assassin before firing his shot[2].
