Tamworth Fortress

Tamworth Fortress was a fortress in Ledecestrescire, England that served as the stronghold of the kings of Mercia from the reign of King Offa until the late 9th century.

History

In 873, King Burgred of Mercia held up in the fortress with his thegn Leofrith when the Sons of Ragnar led by Ivarr the Boneless and Ubba Ragnarsson, along with their allies Sigurd Styrbjornsson and Eivor Varinsdottir, came to negotiate with Burgred over the throne of Mercia. The Ragnarssons were previously paid off by Burgred to prevent a Viking invasion but soon returned, with the aim of installing the noble Ceolwulf as their puppet king. When Burgred refused to surrender the crown, the Vikings, along with Ceolwulf's son Ceolbert, launched an assault on the fortress, intending to take the throne by force. Although they were able to breach and capture the stronghold, Burgred was able to escape their grasp and hide in an undisclosed location.[1]

With Tamworth now under their control, the Ragnarssons made it their stronghold during their search for Burgred. It was also later where they held the captive Queen Æthelswith[2] and the coronation of Ceolwulf as king after Burgred's capture by Eivor.[3]
