The Sunstone was a mineral used as a light projection material to open Isu vaults and chambers.
History[edit | edit source]
In the Isu Era, sunstones were configured and mounted on certain mechanisms to project and aim light beams, which were used to open doorways, chambers and vaults across the Nine Realms, especially in Ásgarðr,[1] and Svartálfaheimr.[2][3]
During his campaign to rescue his son Baldr, the Æsir lord Havi had to find a sunstone in Onarthorp per dwarven scholar Einar's instructions to open the Vault of the Ancients. From his inspection of Onarthorp, Havi found the stone in an abandoned house and brought it to Einar at one of his workshops at Hvergelmir Mylna. However, due to Einar's workshop being unfunctional, Havi assisted Einar and used his Hugr-Rip to activate the "Power of Muspelheim," in order to withstand the lava to heat the sunstone. Afterwards, the stone changed its form into a yellow glossy texture with etchings all over it. Once he was done, Havi handed to the stone to Einar to work on before leaving to meet with Tyra and Fritjof to prepare to open the Vault of the Ancients.[4]
In the Viking age, some of these sunstone and their respective devices remained active, such as the Isu vault pedestal found in the Cave of Gold on the Isle of Skye. The devices were found by both the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir and the Spartan mercenary Kassandra, who used them to open a doorway to find and stop the artifact that was inflicting the isle's inhabitants with nightmares.[5]
