The river Strymon is a river running through Makedonia, Greece, to flow into the Strymonian Gulf in the Aegean Sea.
History
During the Second Persian Invasion of Greece, the Emperor of the Achaemenid Empire, Xerxes I of Persia, had white horses sacrificed as well as nine young women and men buried alive before crossing the river to confront the forces of Leonidas I of Sparta at the Hot Gates of Thermopylai in Malis.[1]
Afterwards the place near the river where this happened was known as Xerxes' Sacrifice of the Nine. The Followers of Ares had made their camp therein, and were subsequently slain by the Spartan misthios Kassandra.[1]
