A splinter bomb is an explosive device that injures or kills people within its blast radius by dispersing dispersing deadly shrapnel. They can be crafted using any shell or gunpowder type combined with sharp fragments.[1]
History
Splinter bombs were highly effective in direct confrontations, as the detonation of even one such bomb could kill anyone within its radius, including both of the Byzantine Empire and Ottoman Empire's most heavily-armored soldiers, the Almogavars and Janissaries respectively. However, due to its indiscriminate nature, civilian casualties were a very real possibility when they are present. Splinter bombs were one of only two types of bombs in the Ottoman Assassins' arsenal that could open up sealed wells, with the other being thunder bombs, though they did not have exclusive use of them, as Janissaries also utilized splinter bombs.[1]
Behind the scenes
Splinter bombs are essentially predecessors to modern fragmentation grenades which is the standard type of grenade used by militaries.
