A splinter bomb is an explosive device that injures or kills people within its blast radius by dispersing dispersing deadly shrapnel. They can be crafted using any shell or gunpowder type combined with sharp fragments.[1]
They are highly effective in direct confrontations, as the detonation of even one such bomb can kill anyone within its radius, including the heavily armoured Almogavars and Janissaries. However, due to its indiscriminate nature, civilian casualties are a very real possibility when they are present. Despite this, splinter bombs were one of only two types of bombs in the Ottoman Brotherhood of Assassins' arsenal that could open up sealed wells, with the other being thunder bombs.[1]
Besides the Ottoman Assassins, the Janissaries of the Ottoman Empire also serviced the splinter bomb.[1]
Behind the scenes
Splinter bombs are essentially predecessors to modern fragmentation grenades which is the standard type of grenade used by militaries.
