Areion was a legendary, immortal horse in Greek mythology.
History
According to the story, Areion was born from the union of Demeter, the Greek goddess of crops and fertility, and Poseidon, the Greek god of the oceans. Chased by Poseidon, furious Demeter assumed the form of a mare, but Poseidon merely followed suit.[1]
Influence
The story of Areion's conception was immortalized as a statue raised on top of a hill in the Forest of Soron in Arkadia.[1]
Trivia
- Though different accounts of Areion's parentage exist, the version written by Pausanias in his Description of Greece is used in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.
