The Santa Maria Novella district was one of five districts of Florence.

Database Entry

This district takes its name from the Church of Santa Maria Novella, the first great basilica in Florence. Here you can find the city's great marketplace, the Mercato Vecchio, which lies at the north end of the district.[1]

The church of San Lorenzo, built in 393, is on the north side of the district, while Santa Maria Novella is adjacent to the Mercato Vecchio in the district's center.
