Salvador, originally São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos, [citation needed] is the capital city of the State of Bahia in Brazil. [citation needed] It was the capital of Brazil from 1549 to 1763, when Rio de Janeiro became the capital. [citation needed]
History
Salvador thrived in the early 18th century as many eager Europeans arrived hoping to make a living in the Americas.[1] Its lower city was a major financial center because of the teeming markets and its status as a port.[2] The Welsh pirate Edward Kenway, seeing Salvador as one of the best places to meet traders and earn quick money,[3] shipped wine, cocoa pods,[1] rice,[2] and plenty of tobacco to the city.[3]
