Rurik (c. 830 – 879) was a Varangian chieftain of the Rus' who founded and built the city of Novogrod in modern-day Russia. He was also the founder of the dynasty that ruled the various monarchies of Russia until the 17th century.

Biography

In 879, Rurik established trading routes across Europe, including one in the Norse-Gaelic Kingdom of Dublin in Ireland. The Dubliners noted Rurik as being a shrewd bargainer under all his fur and leather with a strong love of ale.[1]
