The term "Romani" is not unflattering; that is what some of them call themselves and it comes from a Romani word. "Gypsy", however, is based on a misconception. Also, evidence points to Indian - not Persian - origin. |

The Romani were a faction for hire, consisting of dancers, fire breathers and musicians. With their spirited performances, they were sure to make an impression – and distract anyone.[1]
The Romani were stateless people originally from the eastern reaches of Persia. Over many centuries, their population migrated west, eventually reaching as far as Eastern Europe and northern Africa.
Sometimes also referred to as Gypsies, the rather unflattering term "Romani" arose from the misconception that they and the Romanian people belonged to the same ethnicity.
Trivia
- The Romani will replace the Courtesans in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, who were not accepted in Ottoman society.[2]
