The Red Army was the land force of the Soviet Union, and the main component of the Soviet Armed Forces alongside the Soviet Navy. Born with the Russian Revolution, it was the primary means by which the Bolsheviks fought the Russian Civil War.
After World War II, the Red Army was renamed to the Soviet Army, and remained active throughout the 20th century until the collapse of the Soviet Union and the establishment of the Russian Federation, at which point it was replaced by the Russian Army.
