An 18th-century real

The Real or Reale (symbol R), also known as the Spanish real, was a unit of currency minted and used in Spain and its colonies from the 14th until the 19th century. It shares its name with the otherwise unrelated modern Brazilian currency "Real" (symbol R$), which has been the official currency of the country[1] since 1994.[2]

History

During the Reconquista in the 15th century, the real was Spain's main currency.[3] The real later made its way to the New World following the Spanish Empire's expansion, so that by the Golden Age of Piracy, it was the currency most commonly used throughout the West Indies.[4]
