The rat (Rattus) is a genus of long-tailed rodents which favors urban environments.
History
Throughout human history, rats have made their homes in the urban environment of major cities, especially those of less affluent districts, roaming the area scouring or food and shelter. They could be found in many places across the world, ranging from Alexandria, Egypt in the 1st century BCE;[1] Norway and England during the 9th century Viking expansion;[2] Damascus and Acre during the Third Crusade;[3] throughout China in the Ming dynasty;[4] Boston and New York City during the Seven Years' War[5] and subsequent American Revolution;[6] and London in the midst of the Industrial Revolution.[7]
