Polynikes was a Theban King, the son of Oedipous and the younger brother of Eteokles in Greek mythology.

Following a dispute between the brothers over the rule of the city of Thebes Polynikes ended up in Argos, the capital of Argolis. There he pleaded his case to King Adrastos, who granted him an army. With six others, Polynikes led the army to retake Thebes.[1]
