It was little more than a small, two-story building with jail cells on the ground floor and a study on the top floor. During the French Revolution, Police Minister Charles Cochon de Lapparent used this as his office. He frequently had to contend with the poor, petty thief Eugène François Vidocq, who made a habit of running-in with the law to be freely fed in prison.
