Oshi-hiraki Toyosakura-hiko-no-mikoto (押開豊桜彦命, 22 September 701 – 4 June 756), was the 45th emperor of Japan, reigning as Emperor Shōmu (聖武).[1] During his reign, he commissioned the construction of the Tōdai-ji temple, started in 743 and finished in 752.[2] In 759, he abdicated the throne in favor of his daughter Abe (阿倍) and became a Buddhist priest.[1]
