The New England Hunting Society was a hunting club founded in 1770 British America. A number of trappers who earned their living in the frontier, including Simon Girty, had the idea to have a network of cabins that would act as a safe haven and warm place to rest for those who spent the season trapping in area. The idea proved successful and, according to their records, as many as two dozen hunters used the building at any one time.[1]

Originally merely a network of shared cabins scattered throughout the frontier, it quickly evolved into a more formalized society where members logged their kills in writing, though only after several of brawls over the title of mightiest hunter.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Ratonhnhaké:ton visiting one of the Hunting Society's cabins

Colonial Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton undertook a number of hunts on behalf of the society, dealing with a man-eating bear,[2] an unusually fast bobcat,[3] a male deer which seemed impervious to firearms,[4] an alpha wolf,[5] a vicious cougar that had been attacking Kanien'kehá:ka youths,[6] and a particularly aggressive elk;[7] earning mementos, which he put up in the Davenport Homestead.[8]
