Nero (Latin: Nerō Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus; 37 CE – 68 CE) was the fifth Roman Emperor, reigning from 54 until his death. He was the last Emperor in the Julio-Claudian dynasty.

Biography

During his reign, Nero built a lavish Golden Palace after the Great Fire of Rome in 64 CE. Nero also commissioned a 35 meter tall bronze statue of himself to be placed just outside the Palace's main entrance. Some people claimed that he intentionally started the fire to make room for his palace on Esquiline Hill. It was also likely that Nero used the aqueducts to build his palace because they did not give water to civilians anymore for a time.[1][2]

Starting from the construction of his Golden Palace, the Acquedotto Claudia went completely dry for nine years. Nero's passionate project needed copious amounts of water, the construction only took place at the base of Claudia. After the construction was finished the water returned.[3]

At one point during his reign, Nero instructed his engineer Manius Calvisius to rig four tombs in Anglo-Saxon England with traps to prevent locals from gathering at these tombs and starting a rebellion against his reign.[4]

Nero committed suicide in 68 CE, ending the Julio-Claudian dynasty of emperors.[5]
