Mount Vesuvius (Italian: Monte Vesuvio) is a volcano and a famous naturally occurring landmark located near the Italian city of Naples.

History

Arguably one of the most fabled volcanoes in history, Vesuvio destroyed both Pompeii and Herculaneum when it erupted in 79 CE, both of which were never rebuilt. Since that catastrophe, it has erupted three dozen times.[1]

Today, it is still considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, as over 3 million people live within range of a major eruption.[1]
