Mount Athos is a mountain of more than 2,000m, and a peninsula which constituted the easternmost region of Chalkidike, a region of Makedonia, Greece.
History[edit | edit source]
In 492 BCE, during the Greco-Persian Wars, Xerxes I of Persia had a channel dug at the entrance of the peninsula.[1]
Around 429 BCE the mountain was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra, who eliminated the legendary lion who dwelt on the mountain.[2]
