Melanthios was the goatherd of Odysseus, the hero in Homer's Odyssey. As the Trojan War raged, Melanthios believed that it had claimed Odysseus, and attempted to impress the new suitors of Penelope, Odysseus' wife. When a ragged and disguised Odysseus returned to Ithaka after his adventures, Melanthios struck him, believing him to be a mere beggar.[1] Melanthios also owned a farm north of Odysseus' palace, which the misthios Kassandra visited in 431 BCE.[2]
