Mehmet II (30 March 1432 – 3 May 1481), born Mehmed bin Murad (Turkish: II Mehmet; Ottoman Turkish: Mehmed-i sani), was the seventh Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1444 to September 1446, and from February 1451 to 1481.

Biography

Using an Apple of Eden, he conquered the city of Constantinople, killed the last Byzantine Emperor, Constantine XI and brought the Byzantine Empire to its demise at the age of 21.[1]

In 1459, he initiated the construction of the Topkapı Palace in Constantinople, then called Yeni Sarayi or "New Palace". The palace served as the official residence of the Ottoman Sultans for almost 400 years until 1856.[2]

In 1480, he had his portrait painted by the Venetian artist Gentile Bellini, after having recently signed a peace treaty with Venice.[3]
