Louis XVIII (17 November 1755 – 16 September 1824), born Louis Stanislas Xavier, Comte de Provence, was King of France from 1814 to his death, although he was exiled briefly in the Hundred Days of 1815.
After Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated, the House of Bourbon was restored as the royal house of France, and Louis took the throne as the constitutional monarch, a title previously held by his brother, Louis XVI.[1]
In 1820, King Ferdinand VII of Spain was ousted by a military uprising, starting a period during which a liberal government ruled Spain known as the Trienio Liberal. However, this period ended in 1823 when Louis XVIII ordered the French army to intervene and reinstate Ferdinand's absolute power.[2]
Following his death, Louis was succeeded by his younger brother, Charles X.[1]
