Amritsar is a city in north-west India and the spiritual centre of the Sikh religion in the state of Punjab.

History

In 1801, Amritsar became the capital of the region after the creation of the Sikh Empire by Ranjit Singh.[1]

By 1839, ruins of the First Civilization remained intact underneath the city, where Ranjit Singh kept the Koh-i-Noor hidden. As of 1839, Amritsar also served as the headquarters of the Indian Brotherhood of Assassins.[2]
