L'étoile polaire is a type of spiked, long mace designed for cavalrymen which continued to be prevalent in France by the time of the French Revolution. One was awarded by Police Minister Charles Cochon de Lapparent to the Assassin Arno Dorian after the latter solved the murder of the Limping Dog Tavern's bartender.
Description
L'étoile polaire, which translates to "the polar star" from French, is a polearm variant of the similarly named morningstar. As such, it consists of a spiked metal ball planted on top of a long shaft rather than just a handlebar. This extends the range of the weapon, a modification favorable to horsemen. Although l'étoile polaire boasts more spikes than its cousin, the ceremonial long mace, its wounding and piercing power was inferior to it.[1]
History
L'étoile polaire was among the specialty weapons of the police in France at the end of the 18th century. As such, it was not available for regular sale. Sometime between April 1796 and July 1797,[2] the Police Minister Charles Cochon de Lapparent gave one to the Assassin Arno Dorian of the Parisian Brotherhood as a reward for solving the murder of the Limping Dog Tavern's bartender.[3]
