The Kerkyon Wrestling Ground was an open-air place by the road from Megara to Sanctuary of Eleusis.
By the 5th century BCE, the place served as a memorial for the mythical king of Eleusis, Kerkyon. According to the story, he challenged travellers to wrestling matches, and slew those he defeated, until along came Theseus, who bested Kerkyon and killed him.[1]
During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the monument.[2]
Trivia
- The name of the place references the "wrestling school of Cercyon" mentioned by the Cean poet Bacchylides in his Dithyrambs. According to the Description of Greece by Pausanias, the associated place did actually exist.
