Kata is a Japanese word (型 or 形) meaning "form". It refers to a detailed choreographedpattern of martial arts movements. It can also be reviewed within groups and in unison when training. It is practiced in Japanese martial arts as a way to memorize and perfect the movements being executed.

During the times of Feudal Japan, Kata techniques were practiced by Yasuke, who learnt from Akai Teruko, Master Kamiizumi Nobutsuna,Yamamoto Masakatsu and other masters. Yasuke himself would teach some to Junjiro and Fujibayashi Naoe. It could be observed in this time, that practitioners of Kata were typically sympathetic to Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins.

Yasuke practicing kata

Kata (型 or 形, meaning "form")[1] are chains of practiced martial art movements meant to help practitioners visualize a combat scenario while training, as well as help build muscle memory.[2]

Yasuke, a member of the Kakushiba ikki active in late Sengoku period Japan, learned kata from watching his own martial arts teacher, Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, and would later pass on his teachings to Fujibayashi Naoe and Junjiro.[3] During his travels while tracking down the Shinbakufu, Yasuke would also periodically stop and practice kata at many locations.[4]
