Judaism is a monotheistic and ethnic religion originating in the Middle East and containing the collective traditions and civilizations of the Jewish people. Jews are an ethnoreligious group that include both those born into the faith and those who converted.[1]
History
In 1099, the Jewish population living in Jerusalem was massacred by the invading Christian army following the siege of the city.[2]
During the Reconquista, the Iberian kingdoms of Portugal and Spain persecuted their Jewish populations and forced conversion to Christianity. Famously, under pressure from Spain, King Manuel I of Portugal ordered the Jewish population out of his country but also sent his men to block the ports, preventing any escape and forcing conversion. The Assassins reached out to their allies, and Portuguese guards sympathetic to the Jews allowed them to use an abandoned port to try and save as many people as they could. Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II offered refuge to the victims of the Inquisition fleeing from Spain and Portugal.[3][4]
