Islam is a monotheistic religion which originated in Arabia and is dominant in the Middle East, South Asia, and North Africa. Islam is an Abrahamic religion along with Judaism and Christianity centered on the Quran and the teachings of Muhammad. Adherents of Islam, called Muslims are the world's second-largest religious population after Christians.[1] During the Crusades, they were also conventionally called Saracens by their Christian enemies.[2] To the Spaniards during the Reconquista, they were often referred to as Moors and conflated with Arabs and African peoples alike.[3] Mosques, which are places of worship for this faith, are prominent features in cities which have historically boasted a prominent Islamic presence or which have been influenced by Islamic culture.[2][4]
