A flying ibis in Egypt

The ibises are a group of wading birds in the family Threskiornithidae with slender necks and long, narrow, downward-curving beaks.

Because of the distinctive appearance of these bills, the ibis symbolized the crescent moon in Egyptian culture, and by extension, Thoth, their god of wisdom, intelligence, and the moon.

Medunamun, a member of the Order of the Ancients acting as the Oracle of Amun in 48 BCE, operated under the cryptonym, the Ibis. That year, ibis beaks were worth 5 drachma in Egyptian markets.
