Hugh de Paynes (also Hugues de Payens) was a French knight and, at some time in his life, Grand Master of the Templar Order. He was the first officially recognized Grand Master, making the Templar Order a public knightly order under the name Knights Templar. With Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, he wrote the Latin Rule, the Creed of the Templars.
