The building reputedly stood on the site of a pre-{{Wiki|Christianity|Christian}} temple, and ranks as the first church built in Constantinople. [[Rome|Roman]] emperor {{Wiki|Constantine the Great|Constantine I}} commissioned the first Hagia Irene church in the 4th century, and from May to July 381, the First Council of Constantinople took place in the church.

Hagia Irene or Hagia Eirene, otherwise known as the Church of Holy Peace, is an Orthodox church located in the outer courtyard of Topkapı Palace in Constantinople.

History

Formerly the site of a pre-Christian temple, the temple was restored by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I during the 6th century after it was burned down. Since then, it has served as an Orthodox church for almost 1000 years.[1]

After the Ottoman conquest, the church was converted into an armory for the Janissaries due to its close proximity to the royal palace.[1]

Today, the church operates as a museum and a music hall.[1]
