Guildford, also known as Gildefort, is a town in the county of Surrey in England. During the Anglo-Saxon period, the town was part of the historic county of Sussex and was home to a church dedicated to the 7th century Kentish saint Lewinna.
In the 9th century, Guildford was primarily used as a storage for its grains which supplied the Wessex stronghold of Portcestre in Suthsexe. Circa 875, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir met with Ubba Ragnarsson at the town, burning the grain silos to effectively cut off Portcestre's food supplies.[1]
