George Opdyke (1805 – 1880) was an American entrepreneur and the Mayor of New York during the American Civil War from 1862 to 1864.
Biography
New York draft riots
Near the end of his term as Mayor, Opdyke recruited and equipped troops and responded to the developing riots regarding the conscription.[1] Opdyke and Governor Horatio Seymour wished for the riots to cease, his stance on the matter being discussed at the same time by Niblo's Garden theatergoers to the Italian opera singer Adelina Patti.[2] Opdyke was to meet with William M. Tweed as was obligatory to the latter. Unbeknown to Opdyke, the riots were in fact orchestrated by Tweed as the Grand Master of the Templar Order, and had planned for the city to burn and sweep Opdyke away with it.[3]
