Galileo Galilei (15 February 1564 – 8 January 1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist, engineer, philosopher and mathematician.

In 1633, he was suspected of heresy by the Roman Inquisition. Ordered to renounce his scientific theories, Galileo refused and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.
