The Fatih Mosque (Turkish: Fatih Camii) is a mosque in Constantinople.
History
The Fatih Mosque was built by the Turks just after the conquest of Constantinople, and was the first mosque of Ottoman origin in the city. After Sultan Mehmet II realized that the dome of the Fatih Mosque was built smaller than Hagia Sophia, he had the architect's hand cut off for lack of ambition.
Trivia
- The name was coined from Ottoman Turkish words fātiḥ, meaning "conqueror", and camii, meaning "mosque", resulting in "Conqueror's Mosque".
